Generation No. 1 1. JOSEPH1 SIMON was born in Hungary, and died Unknown. He married VERONICA PINTER. She was born in Hungary, and died Unknown. Notes for JOSEPH SIMON: Debrecen's central attraction is its classical 19th-century Nagytemplom, or Great Church, built between 1803 and 1822. Since the 16th century, Debrecen, sometimes called the "Hungarian Geneva" or the "Calvinist Rome," has been a Protestant stronghold. At one time only Calvinists were allowed to live within its borders. For a brief period Debrecen was the capital of Hungary. From 1848-1849 the government, rebelling against the Hapsburgs, fled Budapest, declared independence and claimed the Republic of Hungary. Today the cultural life of Debrecen revolves around its universities. The Lajos Kossuth University of Arts and Sciences, the University of Agriculture, the Medical School, and the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music are all combined into the University of Debrecen. Other historic attractions include the Reformed College with its large collection of rare books in theology and science, and the Deri Museum. Debrecen has numerous restaurants and shops as well as abundant recreational activities including parks, theaters, movies and sporting events. In the Great Forest District, near Kossuth University, is the arboretum, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, thermal baths, sporting fields, an amusement park and a zoo. St. Anna's Catholic Church, built in 1946, is an example of the baroque architecture of Christioan John Carlone. The oldest religious building in Debrecen is the Kistemplom (Small Church), on Piac utca. Its truncated tower was built after its onion-shaped dome was blown off in a storm in 1876. Nearby is the Csokonai Theatre (1861 - 1865), built in the Romantic-Moorish style. At one time this theater was the largest provincial theater in Hungary, seating 2,000 people. Just west of Debrecen, Hortobagy, or the Hungarian Steppe, is noted for its history as well as its hot summers and bitter cold winters. About 40 percent of the steppe is grassland preserved as a National Park. The Tisza river, which originates in Romania and flows through Hortobagy, is the second largest river in Hungary. In ancient times most of the population was destroyed by Tartar and Turkish invasions. Today small villages flourish across the Hortobagy landscape. One of the largest cities of the country, it is an important commercial center and railway junction, servicing a rich agricultural region. The chief trading commodities are grain, cattle, and hogs. Industrial products include woolen fabrics, leather goods, casks, soap, and foodstuffs. One of the city's notable buildings is the Protestant church in which the Hungarian patriot Lajos Kossuth proclaimed the country's independence from Hapsburgs rule in 1849. A university in Debrecen, founded in 1912, is named after him. Because the city has long been the center of Hungarian Protestantism, it has been called "the Calvinist Rome." Between 1941 and 1945, during World War II, Debrecen served as the temporary capital of Hungary. Population (1993 estimate) 217,000. "Debrecen," Microsoft(R) Encarta(R) 98 Encyclopedia. ANNA2 SIMON (JOSEPH1) was born 1869 in Budapest, Hungary, and died July 12, 1937 in 24-40 28th Street, Astoria, New York. She married JOSEPH BEDNARIK Bef. 1893 in Budapest, Hungary, son of JOSEPH BEDNARIK and VALENTINE FARNIE. He was born 1872 in Hungary, and died November 1, 1934 in Lenox Hill Hospital, New York City, New York. Notes for ANNA SIMON: Before Anna's husband Joseph died in 1934 (I estimate this date to be 1925 when Margaret Koenig was in 7th, 8th/9th grade at PS 96), Anna was run over by an olive oil delivery truck in New York City while on the way to the 91Street Public Library. As a result of the accident, her leg was amputated, and she received a large financial settlement which she used to buy a new home in Astoria, New York, at 24-40 28th Street. The address, 24th Avenue was also known as Woolsey and 28th Street was also known as Chauncey Street in 1920. Source: Margaret Barbi December 28, 2000. More About ANNA SIMON: Notes for JOSEPH BEDNARIK: Joseph lived at 39-71 49th Street, Long Island City, New York, when he died in 1934. Death information and parents' names come from State of New York Death Certificate number 23890. Joseph and his brother Steven were twins. Steven Bednarik and his wife had no children, but adopted a child. Polk's 1918 New York City Book shows Joseph Bednarik as a shoemaker living at 311 East 91st Street. According to Margaret Barbi (his grand-daughter), Joseph Bednarik: a)
At one time yawned so hard that he could not close his mouth and had to be
taken to hospital to have his mouth closed, b) At another time while
walking on the streets of NYC, he fell through a defective basement stair
grate, and c) During a visit to the bank to deposit Margaret's (his grand
daughter) money, someone stole the deposit. He returned home to tell her
about the theft saying that since it was her money - - it was her loss!! 1910 US Federal Census shows following indiviudals living at 309 East

More About MARGARET BEDNARIK: Notes for FERDINAND KOENIG: According to Ferdinand Koenig's Death Certificate number 5804 State of New York, he was in the United States for 35 years, and was a tailor for 35 years (meaning he started this occupation when he arrived in the United States in 1903 at age 12). However, the 1910 Federal Census shows Ferdinand living with his cousin Rudolp Krapes at 230 East 10th Street, New York, NY; and arriving in the United States in 1907 (the same date all the Krapes Family arrived). It also indicated he was 48 at the time of his death which means he was born in 1890 which is the date on his grave stone. I do not know where I obtained December 15, 1891, from. 1910 Federal Census shows following individuals living at 230 East 10th

MARGARET VERONICA4 KOENIG (MARGARET3 BEDNARIK, ANNA2 SIMON, JOSEPH1) was born October 8, 1913 in Yorkville, Manhattan, NY, and died March 6, 2005 in Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland. She married MARIO ALFREDO BARBI August 18, 1935 in St. Sebastians' RC Church, Woodside, Long Island, NY, son of ANTONIO BARBI and CAROLINA SERRA. He was born March 5, 1912 in 105 Graham Avenue, Long Island City, New York, and died April 6, 1983 in 141-07 73 Avenue, Flushing, New York. Notes for MARGARET VERONICA KOENIG: In the early 1930's Margaret earned $18 per week as a stenographer (typing/shorthand) for a male boss in downtown Brooklyn for the Lester Piano Company. Lester Piano was a Pennsylvania firm that had stores on the East coast. This money helped her family during the hard times of the Depression. In 1939, Margaret moved into her current home at 141-07 73 Avenue, Flushing, New York, also known as Kew Gardens Hills, New York. She then worked for Wheeler Shipbuilding in Whitestone, NY, during WW 2, as a secretary. Wheeler Shipbuilding made PT boats. In the early 1940's, Margaret went to work for the Overhead Door Company for a short time. Then her brother, William Koenig, got her a job at Sperry Gyroscope Company in Garden City, Long Island, which built analog computer-controlled bomb sights and ariborne radar systems. Until her retirement in 1978, she was an executive secretary for a number of insurance companies in New York City. When her son, Kenneth, was born in 1945, she left work to raise him. Her husband, Mario, had been drafted in to the Army where he was assigned to the Signal Corps. Because Margaret had a blood clot during her pregnancy, Doctor Goldstein (attending physician) asked the Red Cross to curtail Mario's assignment to California en route to the Pacific war zone. Mario was assigned to Fort Dix, New Jersey, for the duration of WW 2. This information was provided orally by Margaret Barbi to Kenneth Barbi on July 24, 2000. More About MARGARET VERONICA KOENIG: Notes for MARIO ALFREDO BARBI: After WW 2, Mario worked for John Hancock Insurance Company until his retirement. On the wedding announcement, Mario's middle name is written as Albert. On his Birth Certificate number 1603 State of New York, the birth date is shown as March 6, 1912. Mario always celebrated his birth day on March 6th. On Mario's Baptismal and death certificate his birthday is shown as March 5, 1912. No record at 105 Graham Avenue (where Mario A. Barbi was born in 1912) in 1915 New York Census of any Barbi family living there--page that applies is Block X ED 20, Page 8. See note under Antonio Barbi showing Antonio, Carolina, Mario, and Eunice [Inez] living at 72 Camelia, Astoria, New York, in 1920 US Federal Census. On back of Mario's Baptismal Certificate is the address 147-16 15th Drive, Whitestone, New York, where it is presumed he lived in the 1930's prior to his marriage to Margaret. No record in the 1925 New York Census, of any Barbi family living at 147-16 15th Drive, Whitestone, New York.
