Notes for JOHN 'THE YOUNGER' MERRILL:

John Merrell, The Younger, joeman, probably meant free holder, a farmer who owns his land, as Wherstead was far from the King's residence, and it is unlikely that John was one of the select bodyguard (Yoeman) of 100 men chosen to guard the sovereign in 1485.

She was born Abt. 1610 in Denham, Suffolk, England, and died January 25, 1672 in Newbury, Essex, Massachusetts.

Notes for NATHANIEL MERRILL:

Nathaniel Merrill settled, Newbury, Mass. 1638-9. The newly found records show that Nathaniel Merrill's daughter, Susanna, was not baptized until Dec 12, 1638 in Lawford, Essex, Co., England. This tells us that Nathaniel had not left for America with his family until late December 1638 or early 1639. In 1638 the English Government started restricting it's citizens from freely emigrating to the new continent with it's abundance of land for all, something unknown in England. The fact that brother John arranged for a home site of four Acres in Newbury for his unnamed "brother" would indicate that the brother was not there by 23 July 1638 but was arranging to come. Ship records, the Hector, show that Nathaniel and John did arrive in Ipswich, Mass. in 1635. Nathaniel must have returned to England to get his wife and his four children and returned in 1638-39.

From "A Merrill Memorial" by Samuel Merrill, Cambridge MA 1917-1928

Nathaniel Merrill was one of the earliest settlers in Newbury, MA in 1635. He was the ancestor of the vast majority of those who now bear the Merrill name in this country: it is believed, indeed, that less than one percent of the Merrills in America can trace their pedigree to any other emigrant ancestor.

Nathaniel Merrill and his older brother John were born in England. The registers of Wherstead, a parish lying three miles south if Ipswich, in Suffolk County, England, contain the following entries:

1599, August 16. John Merrell son of Nath! Merrell & Mary his wife was baptized. 1601, May 4. Nathaniel Merrell son of Nath! Merrell & his wife Mary was baptized. There are reasons for believing that these entries are the record of baptism of John and Nathaniel Merrill of Newbury. These reasons will be given at length in another place. Nathaniel Merrill and his brother John settled in Newbury in the spring of 1635, having passed a year or two in Ipswich, MA., (then called Agawam) with most of the Newbury settlers. In 1638 Nathaniel became one of the "proprietors" of Newbury. It is supposed that Nathaniel Merrill was married before leaving England. No record is found of his marriage in America. If the marriage took place here it was probably at Ipswich, in the short time before the settlement in Newbury. His wife's name was Susanna. Savage, in the "genealogical Dictionary of New England" (published in 1861), says that Nathaniel Merrill married Susanna Jordan. In this he has no doubt following Coffin's "History of Newbury" (published in 1845), and the statement has been frequently copied.

From "Merrill Genealogy" by Paul V. Merrill, The Merrill Newsletter, Vol 4, Issue 3.

Nathaniel and his brother John came to America in 1633, supposedly on the ship Hector. [Ed note: it is not know that John came first and Nathaniel at some later date.] They landed at Ipswich, MA, but soon moved to Salisbury, MA. By 1635 Nathaniel moved to Newbury, MA. He owned land in Ipswich, MA in 1636 and received a grant of land in Newbury, MA on the "Neck" south of the Parker River, May 5, 1638. Children, John, Abraham, Nathaniel, Susanna, Daniel, Abel and Thomas. Nathaniel died- Mar 16

1654/44 in Newbury, MA. His wife died Jan 15 1872. Nathaniel was probably a farmer and is ancestor to all the Merrills in the U.S.A.. His brother John and wife had a daughter but no sons.

Notes for SUSANNAH WOLTERTON:

Susannah Wolterton, was the wife of the emigrant, Nathaniel Merrill. For many years she was thought to be the sister of Gregory Wolterton of Hartford, Conn. Later research shows that she probably is the daughter of Gregory's wife, Susannah (Unknown) by a previous marriage.

After the death of Nathaniel Merrill ,his widow married Stephen Jordan (or Jourdain). Nathaniel Merrill, son of Nathaniel and Susanna Merrill, gave a deed, under date of 16 Aug 1661, to Peter Godfrey of Newbury, in which the phrase occurs, "after the decease of my mother Susanna Jordan," and out of this fact the error regarding the maiden name of Nathaniel's wife grew. The conjecture has been advanced, and it has even been stated as a fact, that the wife of Nathaniel Merrill was Susanna Wilterton (or Wolterton.) Gregory Wilterton of Hartford was childless: Susanna Merrill of Newbury was a widow with five sons and a daughter, most of them in their minority. It would have been natural for Gregory Wilterton under these circumstances to write to his kinswoman in the Massachusetts Bay Colony and offer a home and modest fortune to one of the boys. But Gregory Wilterton may have been a more distant relative, or merely a friend. Until other evidence is brought forward the conscientious genealogist must say that the maiden name of Nathaniel's wife in unknown.

Notes for NATHANIEL MERRILL:

Nathaniel spent his life in Newbury MA, but whether he was born in England, or in America after his father's migration, is not known. He died 1 jan 1682/83. In a "List of their names who have taken the oath of Allegiance at Newberry, 1678," (vol 30, p.56) his age is recorded as 40 years, while the age of his brother Abraham is given as 41 years. It is believed, however, that Nathaniel was the oldest of the children, a belief based on the fact that he was named as executor of his father's will, and was therefore probabley of age in March, 1655. Addendum 1996: Baptismal records show that Nathaniel was baptized on 25 Jan 1634 in Lawford, Essex Co., England.

Notes for DAVID MERRILL:

The birth date for David Merrill from Howard and Jean Merrill's January 18, 1999, Gen Forum Message Re: David Merrill 1769-1859, says David was born Nov 12, 1768, and died Jan 13, 1859. This birth date is the year before the Annals of Meredith NH published in 1932 page 320 date of birth of 1769. We will use this birth date.

The Annals of Meredith NH published in 1932 page 320 asserts the Merrill family were of Norman descent. That they were located in the north of France, and later came through England to New England. That they married and raised descendants down through to William of the seventh generation, born in 1805; died in 1876 at Holderness. David Merrill (1769-1859)'S connection to the Merrill Family is not clear at this time. We also find mention of Jacob Lee Merrill with no dates. We also find David Merrill, 1769-1859, married to Sarah H. Lee, 1778-1847 from Ossipee Mountain. Ken Barbi August 15, 2000.

From the Death Certificate for Jacob L. Merrill at the New Hampshire Vital Statistics Office provided to me by Ed Merrill on September 11, 2000, we have Jacob L. Merrill's death in July 1889 in Meredith at age 71 years, 3 months, 7 days. This puts his birth in April 1818. His father is David Merrill born in Plymouth, and his mother is Sarah Lee born in Moultonboro.

From the Death Certificate for David Merrill at the New Hampshire Vital Statistics Office provided to me by Ed Merrill on September 11, 2000, we have David Merrill's death on Jan 31, 1859 at age 90 years, 2 months, 19 days. Cause of death was typhoid fever. Birthplace of father was Plymouth. Report came from Holderness, NH.

Mike:

See today's posting "Re David Merrill 1769-1859" . Your Jacob Lee is the son of above David Merrill. Jacob Lee m. Mary Smith of Center Harbor. They are listed in the Holderness census of 1850,1860 and 1870. They had 4 known children: Julia A, Mary L, John S, and George D.

'A Merrill Memorial' has nothing on your Jacob Lee but does have info on what we believe are his grandparents Jacob (5) and Elizabeth Wyatt.

We would be very interested in any information you have on the Merrill surname descendants of your Jacob Lee down to the present day.

Mary Bird Merrill and George David Merrill

18. GEORGE DAVID13 MERRILL (JACOB LEE12, DAVID11, JACOB10, MOSES9, MOSES8, DANIEL7, NATHANIEL6, NATHANIEL5, JOHN 'THE YOUNGER'4, JOHN3 MERYELL, JOHN2, THOMAS1) was born July 25, 1861 in Center Harbor, New Hampshire, and died May 5, 1924 in Lakeport, NH. He married MARY BIRD February 25, 1883 in Meredith, New Hampshire, daughter of UNKNOWN BIRD and UNKNOWN. She was born 1862 in Isle of Malta, British Province, and died 1925 in Lakeport, NH.

Notes for GEORGE DAVID MERRILL:

When George and Mary Merrill bought land behind the Mail Dock in 1906, they began the saga of the Merrill family on Bear Island, Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. In addition to building many of the cottages on the island, George Merrill also provided food, ice and boat services to several generations of island residents.

As the only house on the island with plaster and wallpapered walls, the Merrills' was unique. According to their granddaughter, Mildred Fay Rand, "A well and pump graced the side yard in the center of Hattie's flower beds and people came from along the shore with their jugs to pump water. The playroom was on the third floor. The property next door was the 'Men's Camp.' The workmen employed by my grandfather in his carpentry business lived there and cooked their meals, though occasionally Hattie prepared food for them in her kitchen. The haying field was behind the hen house and vegetable garden. Cattle were brought over by barge from Lovejoy Sands in the spring and taken back in the fall. Milk cost 18 cents a quart, but you had to buy ice and groceries to get it!"

About halfway down the shore lived Dr. George Saltmarch of Lakeport, who was Mary's doctor. Molly Worden from Pine Island, just a stone's throw away, was her midwife. Molly assisted Mary when all nine Merrill babies were born; only one did not live. Arthur was the eldest, then Hattie, Gertrude, Fred, David, Edgar, Helen, and Nellie. All grew up helping with chores, and George taught his carpentry skills to each of his sons who helped him in the business.

WW 1 interrupted the family enterprise when David and Fred were inducted into the Army. David was never sent overseas, but Fred served in observation balloons over the English Channel. He was once shot down, but not seriously injured. Both returned home to help their father, and in time, David married Faith Unknown and daughter Hattie married Park Fay.

Hello Ron,

Thanks for the offer, I will take you up on it. My grandfather, Jacob Lee Merrill was born in Holderness in 1818. In the census of 1870 in Center Harbor, he was 52 yrs. He was married to Mary Smith. My grandfather was George D. Merrill, b. 7/25/1861 and died in Laconia on 5/5/1924. I really need the death of Jacob Lee. Would also like the same of his wife, Mary Smith. We have little access to good genealogical info here in Nevada. Thanks, Mike

Notes for MARY BIRD:

According to Frank Desmond on Aug 22, 1999, the spelling of Mary's last name may have been Byrd from the Island of Malta, but all records at the State of New Hampshire Vital Records Office show George D. Merrill's wife was Mary Bird from the Island of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea. Her mother was of Irish birth and worked in England for royalty. When she married an English soldier who was stationed on Malta (probably during the Napoleonic war) her family disowned her. After her soldier husband died or was killed, Mary emigrated to New Brunswick and (we think) remarried a boot maker. Then she emigrated to New Brunswick. Her third husband was George Merrill.

Mary was a member of Freewill Baptist Church, Meredith, NH.

Notes for FRED MERRILL:

Over the years, the Merrills built a number of houses on the west shore of Bear Island, each with the same basic simple design. These cottages are still recognizable today, even though various owners have made different additions. In 1927, Fred Merrill built the Bulkley house, which had the distinction of being the first on Bear Island to have had indoor plumbing.

When you needed a cabin, dock or boat house, you simply told Fred of your desire and he obliged. In 1931, Dr. John Merselis commissioned Fred to build on land he had purchased in 1923. Sketching what he had in mind on the back of an ordinary envelope, Dr. Merselis gave it to Fred that fall. When the family returned the following spring, the cabin was ready for occupancy, and they have summered there ever since.

In addition to building houses, the Merrills supplied much that was necessary for island living. Dave, the meat cutter, minded the grocery store that they opened at the Mail Dock and Fred, the mechanic, assumed responsibility for kerosene for lamps, and gasoline for boats, as well as maintenance of rental boats berthed in a nest of boat houses by their dock. These boats all had two cylinder McDuff engines with petcocks on top which had to be primed with gasoline. The flywheel rotated by hand at times could be very balky. Fred was an expert in starting these engines. He'd lean against the side of the boat, give the flywheel a gentle roll with his foot--and away it went.

At the time Fred Merrill had the ice route, the Bear Island postmaster was Adelaide Brown.

Notes for DOROTHY 'DOTTIE' ALMENDE:

"A lot of comings and goings took place over there [on Bear Island]," recounts Mildred Fay Rand, Fred Merrill's niece. "People came all the way from New York and Boston for some high entertainment. One of the 'imported guests' was a Ziegfeld Follies girl, Dorothy Almende, and Fred caught us all by surprise--he married her! We had expected him to marry someone else to whom he was already engaged."

"That summer we returned to the island to discover that Fred, probably in his early 40s, had married a chorus girl!" Louise Griscom recalls. "Maybe Dottie's make-up was a bit overdone, but she made Fred a loyal and loving wife. Gradually the color of her bright red hair changed to a less conspicuous henna. Islanders recovered from shock and became very fond of her."

Dottie was a Ziegfeld Follies girl who came to visit Lake Winnipesaukee. Her brother-in-law, David (and his wife Faith) did not like her background and left Bear Island and "moved to Laconia because they could not live and work with a showgirl" according to Mildred Fay Rand, Fred Merrill's niece.

Dottie and Fred took vacations when the lake froze over, but as they grew older, they never left the island. Weeks and Smith's store delivered groceries from Meredith once a week in winter, and on that day, Dottie always baked a cake and served it with coffee to the delivery man who would bring them up-to-date on the latest town gossip.

In the winter of 1945, the Merrill's chimney caught fire, and though no serious damage occurred, Fred became ill shortly thereafter and never recovered. When Fred and Dottie moved to Meredith, where he eventually died.

She married PARK STONE FAY, son of BRIGHAM FAY and IDA HEMENWAY. He was born July 5, 1883 in Lake Village, New Hampshire, and died November 15, 1951 in Laconia, Belknap New Hampshire.

Notes for HATTIE E. MERRILL:

Hattie Merrill married Park Fay shortly after WW 1. Park Fay, also a carpenter like Hattie's father, George Merrill, preferred an independent status. Instead of joining George Merrill, he handled all the boats and work at Beaver Island. Park, Hattie, and their five children had a cottage near The Gulf on what was then called Mansfield's Point, where George Merrill laid the stone steps leading from the dock to the Fay's' house. In the side yard, a tent was built to hold the overflow of children and friends. It was the children's job to gather rocks from the lake for the stone mason, Mr. Zibley of Center Harbor, to build the living room fireplace.
