Notes for THOMAS BRIGHAM:
Governor Winthrop has left a graphic narrative of sixty-four days on shipboard coming hither from old England in 1630. The Rev. Richard Mather also kept a journal of his passage, in 1635, which occupied twelve weeks and two days from taking ship at Bristol to the landing at Boston. These stories present a vivid picture of the perils and privations attending the long voyage Thomas Brigham encountered a little earlier in the latter season, from the somewhat more remote port of London. He must have first set foot on the New England shore early in June, for none of the few passenger lists of that time which have escaped loss or destruction we read:

"VIII April 1635. Theis under written are to be transported to New England imbarqued in the "Susan and Ellen", Edward Payne Mr (Master). The p'ties have brought certificates from y Ministers and Justices of the peace y they are no subsidy men; and are conformable to y orders and discipline of the Church of England.

"Thomas Brigham 32"

Aboard the same ship were Symon Crosby and his wife and infant, future neighbors in Cambridge; Ralph Hudson and Percival Green, who were to be fellow-townsmen there, and also two boys, Benjamin and Daniel, with their father, the learned and reverend Peter Bulkley, who the same year was to found the town of Concord and long was its pastor and benefactor.

In September 1639, Thomas Brigham lived in Cambridge "In the West end one house with three acres of Land and a half the highway to Watertown North Joseph Isack Southeast Symon Crosb (y) Southwest, the high way to the Windemill Hill West." In the 20th Century, this is the corner of Brattle Street and Ash Street.

Thomas Brigham was made by the General Court a Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Company, April 18, 1637, and thus became a member of the body politic and acquired the right to vote.

Notes from The History of the Brigham Family from the New Hampshire Historic Society 20 Park Street, Concord, New Hampshire, obtained by Ken and Susan Barbi on August 12, 2000.

This Thomas Brigham (whom we shall call the "Sixth") was the first generation in America. He was called "The Emigrant"; also called "The Puritan".
In the spring of 1635 a small party of Yorkshire adherents of Rev. Thomas Shepherd, who had been preaching in Buttercombe, a few miles north of Holme on Spalding Moor, decided to migrate with him to New England, and went to London, where on April 18, 1635, they embarked among the passengers of the "Susan and Ellen". in the passenger list appears:
Thos. Brigham, aged 32
Symon Crosby, husbandman, aged 26
Ann Crosby, uxer, aged 25
Tho. Crosby, child aged 8 weeks.
Ann, the wife of Symon Crosby was the daughter of Thomas and Isabel Brigham and from the evidence previously given, there can be no doubt that Thomas Brigham, her fellow passenger, was her own first cousin, double related and a son of John and Constance (Watson) Brigham. He must have first set foot on the New England shore early in June, for in one of the few passenger lists of that time which have escaped destruction, we read;
VIII April 1635. These underwritten are to be transported to New England embarqued in the "Susan and Ellen", Edward Payne, Mr. (master)
Thos. Brigham 32
Symon Crosby 26
Ann Crosby uxor 25
Thos. Crosby, child of 8 weeks

Holme on Spalding Moor is situated about half way between Hull and York, about 25 miles from the North Sea and 10 miles from the River Homben.

Notes for MERCY HURD:
Mercy was 10 or 15 years younger than her husband, and that, persecuted in England for nonconformity, she came to New England with her sister, who married William (?) Cutter.

Mercy Hurd married for her second husband, 1 March 1655, Edmund Rice, then of Sudbury, but who removed in 1660 to Marlboro, where he died 3 May 1663.

On Mar 26, 1676, she was with the people of Marlboro when assembled in their meeting house for worship when the alarm was sounded and they barely reached the garrison house in time to find safety from the attacking Indians, who burned houses and barns and destroyed orchards and cattle. The people shortly retreated to the towns to the eastward, where they remained for some months until peace was assured.

Notes from The History of the Brigham Family from the New Hampshire Historic Society 20 Park Street, Concord, New Hampshire, obtained by Ken and Susan Barbi on August 12, 2000.

Mercy Hurd?1,2 (F)
b. c 1613, d. 22 Dec 1693, #117
Mercy Hurd? was born circa 1613 at England.2,3 She married 1st Thomas Brigham circa 1637 at Cambridge, MA.4,5 Mercy Hurd? married Deacon Edmund Rice on 1 March 1655/56 at Sudbury, MA, (literally 1655) registered as Mary Brigham.2,6 Mercy Hurd? married 3rd William Hunt in May 1663 at Cambridge, MA, William of Marlborough.7,8 Mercy Hurd? died on 22 December 1693 at Marlborough, MA, under the name Hunt.2,9
The 1656 marriage record apparently gives her name as Mary, while the Brigham probate records call her both Mary and Mercy. However, it should be noted that 'Marcy' is often misread as 'Mary.' The probate file of Thomas Brigham confirms that his widow Mercy was married to Edmund Rice by 1656.10

Notes for SUSANNA SHATTUCK:
Susan "Susanna" Shattuck who was the widow of Joseph Morse married John Fay as her second husband after John Fay's first wife, Mary Brigham, died. Susan already had 7 children by Morse, and John Fay's 4 children, and gave birth to 4 more children by John Fay. After John Fay's death, Susan married as her third husband, Thomas Brigham, who was a brother of John Fay's first wife, Mary Brigham. It is interesting to record that from Susan's last marriage, one of her descendants [actually it was her husband Thomas' brother Samuel] was Peter Bent Brigham who left a sum of $1,000,000 which was not to be spent until 25 years after his death. By this time the fund had grown to $2,000,000 and was used to build the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a world famous medical research hospital connected with Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass.

vii. MARY BRIGHAM, b. October 26, 1687; d. Unknown.

9. MARY7 BRIGHAM (THOMAS6, JOHN5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1638 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and died 1676 in Watertown, Massachusetts. She married JOHN FAY Abt. 1669 in Marlboro, Massachusetts. He was born 1648 in England, and died December 5, 1690 in Marlboro, Massachusetts.

Notes for MARY BRIGHAM:
Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Mercy (Hurd) Brigham; born probably in Cambridge, Mass., about 1638; died in Watertown, in 1676; married John Fay, the emigrant, who settled in Marlboro, Mass., and died 5 May, 1690, age 50.

Mary was the first Brigham born in America, and as such deserves special mention. Paige, in his History of Cambridge (pp. 501-2), a most thorough and painstaking work, chronicles that "Mary went to Sudbury and Marlboro with her mother, brothers and sister, when her father died, where she married John Fay of Marlboro." And he cites evidence, as already indicated by a legal document (Mid. Prob. Recs., vii. 9), wherein, joining with other complainants, John Fay and Samuel Fay, children of Mary Fay of Marlboro, and heirs of Thomas Brigham, late of Cambridge began suit September 28, 1695, to recover certain lands in the possession of Samuel Hastings, who possessed also the Puritan Brigham homestead. John Fay Sr.'s wife was Mary, and there was no other Fay in Marlboro at that time of suitable age to be the father of said John, Jr., and Samuel Fay, parties to said suit. Paige was undoubtedly correct, and we must include in our genealogy of the Brighams the children of John and Samuel Fay, sons of Mary (Brigham) Fay. Both of them had large families, among them being sons who became the heads of numerous branches (see Fay Family). There was also a daughter, Mary Fay, who married Jonathan3 Brigham, her cousin, and a son of Thomas2 Brigham; they had 10 children, thus starting several male lines of Brighams. Hudson, in his Hist. of Marlboro, does not conflict with Paige's position; and he adds that John Fay retired (with most other Marlboroites), during King Philip's War, to Watertown, where he buried his wife Mary and a young son David, just coming five years.

John Fay, the husband of Mary Brigham, came to America when he was eight years of age. No mention is made of his parents. He is found in Marlboro as early as 1669. He married (2) Susanna, daughter of William Shattuck of Watertown and widow of Joseph Morse. As will be seen, she married for her third husband, Thomas2 Brigham. [Brigham (1907) p. 63]

Notes for JOHN FAY:
John Fay embarked May 30, 1656, at Gravesend, England, and arrived in Boston on June 27, 1656, at the age of 8 years on the Speedwell (sister ship of the Mayflower). John was by no means the first Fay to come to America. Available Town records in New England show for example that (1) Richard Fay resided in Dorchester MA in 1634; (2) Henry Fay, a weaver of Newberry MA died 6/30/1655 and (3) William Fay was admitted as a townsman in Boston in 1643. These Fay's unquestionably preceded John Fay to America (1656), but there are no records to establish any interrelationship between any of them.

There is, however, reasonable evidence that his father and a brother Michael had preceded him to America. Although there is no documented record of the father (David) or Michael's birth or death. Reference is made in the early Town records of Sudbury, Massachusetts, that the father of John and Michael was David Fay "who came to America prior to 1656." On the other hand the direct lineage of the descendants of John Fay from his birth in 1648 down to 1898 were clearly and logically documented in the records accumulated in Orlin P. Fay's book.

The passenger list of the Speedwell lists five minors, including John Fay age 8 years. These young men were bound to Sudbury MA (settled 17 years previously) where each of them had parents or relatives. It is presumed that since John Fay was the youngest of these minors, he very likely had parents already residing in Sudbury.

Shortly after John Fay's arrival a group of recent immigrants, including young John moved to a new grant which was newly incorporated under the name of Marlboro, MA. The early records of Marlboro show that John Fay was made a freeman in 1669, at which time he had a wife and child. In 1675 the name of John Fay appears among the proprietors of Worcester Mass., and that he had a lot of 50 acres assigned to him "in the eastern squadron, lying next to the County road to Boston." Although, he owned land in Worcester he continued to live in Marlboro until the marauding Indians during the Phillips War made it necessary to move his family to the greater security of Watertown Mass. While in Watertown he buried his first wife, Mary Brigham and one child. His second marriage was to Susan "Susanna" Shattuck who was the widow of Joseph Morse. She had 7 children by Morse and 4 by John Fay.

Ship and Passenger Information:

This list is annotated by the Searcher's office, Gravesend, England, with the date of "30th May, 1656". However, an additional annotation indicates they "were Landed at Boston in N. E. the 27th of the Month, 1656. J. E." The list may have been prepared at departure by the Searcher's office or later by the vessel's master, under a high bond as assurance of the accuracy about those actually making the voyage (such lists were dated at arrival and were endorsed at the Searcher's office on return of the vessel). The source listing, however, shows the "J.E." entry as an endorsement after that of the Searcher's office. In this case, the initials "J.E." were not those of the master and the month was not specified. This leaves questions about the month in which the "27th" actually occurred - before, during, or after May.

From my personal research, I think that John Fay was born in Penton Mewsey, Hampshire, England and not in France. There are unpublished records in England which support this research, but I haven't gotten to see them firsthand. Anyway a large clan of FAY family members are still in England and trace themselves to Collingbourne-Ducis, Wiltshire well before 1600. There is a David FAY marrying an Elizabeth Coale/Cole in December 1616 in Penton Mewsey. This is published in the Parish marriage records, which I found at the Clayton Library in Houston, TX. This is the only David Fay I've found in England for this period.

He married (1) ELIZABETH HOWE, daughter of ISAAC HOWE and FRANCES WOODS. She was born January 17, 1673 in Marlboro, Massachusetts, and died March 29, 1733 in Marlboro, Massachusetts. He married (2) MEHITABLE GOULD. She died Unknown.

Notes for NATHAN BRIGHAM:
Morse states that Captain Nathan Brigham settled on a part of the Thomas homestead, his house being a garrison house in Queen Anne's War. He was a weaver. He inherited the town-right of his father and drew shares of the public land in this right. He held town offices and was 7 years a selectman and for the last time in 1738; was representative in 1726 and '30. April 5, 1733, he made his will, giving his son Thomas 100 acres where he then resided, a house, 6 acres of meadow in Marlboro and 70 acres in Sutton; also a 16 acre town-right, originally John Rediet Jr.'s. His wife, Mehitable, received 20 pounds for a mourning suit, and Ephraim, who had the homestead, was to support her and pay her funeral expenses. March 26, 1746-7, the heirs signed an agreement dividing his estate.

Capt Nathan Brigham1,2 (M)
b. 17 Jun 1671, d. 16 Feb 1746/47, #1909
Pedigree
Capt Nathan Brigham was born on 17 June 1671 at Marlborough, MA.1,3,4,5 He was the son of Thomas Brigham and Mary Rice. Capt Nathan Brigham married Elizabeth Maynard circa 1690 at Marlborough, MA, (your authors note that the 1664 marriage date cited in Supplement 1 is actually Elizabeth's birth date. There is no record of the marriage in the Marlborough VR).6 Capt Nathan Brigham married Elizabeth How it is noted that this is a very unlikely marriage. Regrettably there is no marriage in the Marlborough vital records for Nathan Brigham. However, the death information about Nathan's wife Elizabeth correlates with the birth record for Elizabeth Maynard.7 Capt Nathan Brigham died on 16 February 1746/47 at Marlborough, MA, aged 75y 8m.7,8
Your authors note that no marriage for this Nathan Brigham is found in the Marlborough vital records. Thus, the identification of his wife Elizabeth depends on indirect evidence. Her recorded age at death is sufficient: it matches exactly the recorded birth of Elizabeth Maynard and is fully nine years off from the birth of Elizabeth How. It is, of course, conceivable that Nathan married two different Elizabeths in succession, although, in that case, we would have not just one, but three, unrecorded events to explain (the two marriages and the death of the first wife). If that is indeed the case, then the first wife (Elizabeth How) is most likely the mother of Nathan's children. Investigation of the How and Maynard probate records may shed light on this question. He and Elizabeth How resided at Marlborough, MA.9 WRN: 79.

Notes for SAMUEL FAY:
Samuel Fay settled on his father's land in Southboro where he had a family of 25 children recorded. This is the largest Fay family on record. He had two wives and by his first wife had 14 children and by his second wife 11 children, the youngest died when only an infant.

He was over 70 years old when the youngest child was born. Morse says of him "his first wife died after delivering to him 14 children in 20 years giving him the privilege of marrying another wife which he was patriotic enough to embrace, by whom he had 11 more."

In 1756 his sons Solomon and Samuel were in the King's service at "Crown Point" as soldiers.

His wife was his cousin, Deliverance Shattuck, and his mother was Tabitha Ward, and his children had Fay, Shattuck, Ward, and Brigham blood, as his grandmother was Mary Brigham.

17. MARY8 BRIGHAM (JOHN7, THOMAS6, JOHN5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born May 6, 1678, and died Unknown. She married GERSHOM FAY 1702, son of JOHN FAY and SUSANNA SHATTUCK. He was born October 19, 1681 in Marlboro, Massachusetts, and died November 24, 1720.

Notes for MARY BRIGHAM:
Mary and her husband were exposed, like others of that day, to the incursions of the Indians, and as a protection, palisades were erected around many of the houses to serve as a fort or resort to which the families in the neighborhood might repair in case the Indians should make their appearance. In 1707 a tragical event occurred in Marlboro in that part of the township now included in Northboro. Among the garrison houses in town at that time was one known as Samuel Goodnow's near the stream called Stirrup Brook. This garrison was designed as the resort of the families of Nathaniel Oakes, Jonathan Forbush and Gershom Fay, as well as that of Mr. Goodnow. This precaution undoubtedly saved the life of Mrs. Fay and her two oldest children.

In 1707, Aug. 18, she [Mary was 29 years old at the time] and Miss Mary Goodnow, daughter of Samuel Goodnow, were gathering herbs in a meadow when they saw 20 or more stout Indian warriors stealthily approaching them. They immediately ran for the fort. Mrs. Fay with her children succeeded in reaching it and closing the gate before her pursuers could overtake her. Fortunately there was one man in the garrison, the rest of the men being at work in the field. The savages attempted to break through the enclosure but were repelled by the heroic defenders within, Mrs. Fay loading the muskets belonging to the fort and handing them to her companion; whether it was her husband or not, we do not know, but he was able to keep a constant fire upon the enemy till a party of their friends in the field, hearing the report of the muskets, came to their relief and the enemy fled. Thus was the life of this woman and her two helpless children saved by her own heroism.

William A. Bartlett of Northboro, whose mother and grandmother were Fay's, writes April 3, 1884, as follows: "It is a question whether the garrison house or fort, in which Mrs. Fay's heroism was displayed was some part of the house in which I now live, or whether it was another near by, built on purpose. The grave of Mary Goodnow is on my farm about 30 rods from my house." Her grave still remained without a monument in 1866. She being lame, could not escape from her merciless pursuers. She was overtaken, seized and dragged into the woods across Stirrup Brook and inhumanly murdered and scalped, her mangled remains were found and buried a few days after and her grave was visible 130 years afterwards. The Indians were pursued and overtaken and a battle ensued in which two white men and nine Indians were killed. The packs of the Indians fell into the hands of the whites and in one of them was found the scalp of Miss Goodnow, which furnished the first clue of her melancholy fate.

A large elm tree growing in the cellar, marks the spot where once stood the house of Gershom Fay.

Notes for GERSHOM FAY:
Gershom was one of the first settlers in that part of Marlboro that was afterward set off to Westboro in 1717 and again set off to Northboro in 1727; thus was he an inhabitant of three towns in succession without moving his habitation. He served as Constable in Marlboro in 1714 and in 1718, March 3, being included in Westboro, he was chosen Surveyor of that town. July 24, 1720 and in 1721 he was elected one of the committee for building the first meeting house which stood about 80 rods [1 rod = 16.5 feet] west of Wessonville. In 1720 he was again chosen Constable.

He was admitted to the church in Marlboro before he was set off to Westboro, and continued to worship there until that part of the town where he lived was included in Westboro.

He died at the age of 39 years, leaving a large tract of land in the northwest part of Northboro to be divided to his four sons. His estate was settled without recourse to a probate court.

He left six or seven minor children who were brought up to respectability and industry with no other guardian than their heroic and energetic mother, Mary Brigham, daughter of Dr. John Brigham of Sudbury. She was distinguished for heroism in the Indian war. She received $375 by her father's will.

Gershom Fay was the youngest son of John Fay and he built the first saw mill in Northboro, 60 rods east of the Unitarian church.

She died Unknown.

Notes for LIEUT. NATHAN BRIGHAM:
Morse gather the following facts about Lieut. Natham Brigham. Prior to the second division of the original township of Marlboro, in 1727, Nathan held several minor town offices, but in the new town of Southboro, to which he was set off, he appears at once among her principal citizens, serving the first year as a selectman and soon after as treasurer. He was repeatedly placed on committees for hiring schoolmasters and chosen for the 29th time as a selectman at the age of 77 years, at which he remonstrated and was, with public thank,, excused. He lived near the houses of Samuel and Dana Brigham in the north part of Southboro, and is presumed to have inherited the lands southeast of Crane meadow, drawn in his grandfather Thomas' right. He did inherit the Bible, law-book, cane and sword of his father Nathan. He retained his vigor to a great age and when in his 90th year used to mount his horse without assistance.

25. CAPTAIN STEPHEN9 FAY (JOHN8, MARY7 BRIGHAM, THOMAS6, JOHN5, THOMAS4, THOMAS3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born May 5, 1715, and died May 17, 1781 in Bennington, Vermont. He married RUTH CHILD May 7, 1734, daughter of JOHN CHILD and HANNAH UNKNOWN. She was born August 9, 1714, and died August 6, 1802 in Galliopolis, Ohio.

Notes for CAPTAIN STEPHEN FAY:
He was the father of a very remarkable family and was himself a man of rank. He settled first in Westboro; where he served as constable in 1740, assessor 1745, and in 1747 he was Tythingman. He served as Captain in the French war until after the ratification of peace he held no town office.

The date of his removal from Hardwick to Bennington, Vermont, is given by some as 1762 and again as 1765-6. Captain Stephen Fay was a leading spirit and exercised a powerful influence in the long contest with New York, and during the trying period of the Revolutionary War. He was particularly noted as "Landlord Fay". In settling in Bennington, he erected a public house called first the Green Mountain House, or Tavern; called also "Landlord Fay's", and it became the headquarters of those who resisted the claim of New York and spurned her jurisdiction. On the top of the high sign post exhibited by "Landlord Fay" was the stuffed skin of a Catamount with teeth grinning defiance toward New York, hence it came to be called "The Catamount Tavern". During the period of the early settlement of the state this Tavern was a great resort for travelers and emigrants and became widely known. It was the home of Ethan Allen for several years from 1770 when he came first to the New Hampshire Grant, as Vermont was then called. In this famous tavern sat the "Vermont Council of Safety" in an inner room where in secret they planned, guided and directed the partiotic expedition of the "Green Mountain Boys" to stem the torrent of Burgoyne's invasion and here also Stark and Warner, with the aid of the council, planned the famous attack on Baum's entrenchments where was won the brilliant victory of Bennington which turned the current of success from the British to the American Army and was followed in a few weeks by the capture of Burgoyne and his army at Saratoga.

In the clash of arms at Bennington, Captain Fay was represented by his sons, five of whom, John, Elijah, Benjamin, Colonel Joseph, and David were in the battle August 16, 1777. John being killed at his post of duty.
