Notes for GEORGE ALEXANDER GAMBLIN:
George was a big man. So big in fact, that his wife had to tie his shoes for him. George had a business in the Saint John City Market for 49 years before his death.

George Alexander Gamblin was the first boy born in English Settlement (Pearsonville). In the 1871 census he is listed as living at home and 22 years old. He was called "Butcher George" for he was a butcher in Codys and a very large and heavy man. When he visited the hotel in Saint John, he had to sleep with his shoes on for he couldn't tie them himself. He used to go by boat to Saint John with goods for sale and after take the train to Apohoqui and visit with Isaac Gamblin and at Susan (Long) McKnight and then take the train to Norton and get the Chipman train back to Codys. The 1888 Kings Co. Directory mentions George A. Gamblin in McKnight. He is listed in 1896 directory as farmer, owner in English Settlement, Kings Co. and as farmer & bucher, Starkey's, Queens Co. He was born the year his uncle George A. McCallister Gamblin (George's father's 3rd younger brother) drowned and George was named after him.

Notes for LIEUTENANT WALTER HERBERT GAMBLIN:
Walter Herbert Gamblin known as Uncle Herb. Herb was cremated and his ashes were interred in his parent's grave.

Herb joined the 8th New Brunswick Hussars (Princess Louise's) in early 1940. He served in Sussex, NB and Camp Borden, ON before going overseas with them as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant (RQMS) in 1941.

In early 1942 he returned to Canada in charge of a draft of officer candidates. One of these was Alex Colville, who later became well-known as an artist. After completing the course himself, Herb married Evelyn Longtin.

On his return to the UK in late 1942, he was posted to a holding unit, where he served as an umpire in several training exercises. From there, he joined the British Columbia Dragoons, and landed with them in Bari, Italy. His next assignment was as a liaison officer with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division. He was given a jeep and a week to familiarize himself with Italy, then tasked with acting as the brigadier's eyes and ears in places the commander could not go himself.

After some months, including a spell in a Rome hospital recovering from jaundice, he was posted to 5th Divison HQ as aide-de-camp to MGen Bert Hoffmeister. This turned out to be a very difficult and dangerous job, because Hoffmeister insisted on commanding from forward positions. From his ADC's viewpoint, the reconnaissances to see for himself what was going on were quite hairy.

In 1944, he returned to the BCDs in Italy as commander of 3 Troop C Squadron, responsible for a troop of 3 Sherman tanks. When the Canadian 1st and 5th Armoured Divisions moved from Italy to NW Europe in 1944-45, he remained with the BCDs and spent the last months of the war as a troop commander during the campaign in Holland.

After WW2, Herb and Evelyn moved to Cambridge, where they helped run his parents general store and garage. They shared a passion for sport fishing, and made many trips down Washademoak Lake to Big Cove for pickerel.

In 1959 he joined Canada Customs in Saint John. He worked there until transferred to Yarmouth, NS where he was chief of Customs for southern Nova Scotia until his retirement.

(Source: Herb's brother, William E.S. Gamblin)

Despite a lot of urging, apart from the first story below Herb never wrote about his wartime experiences. The second two stories he related to me during a visit to Yarmouth several years before he passed on. (Evan Gamblin)

The Freak Wave While returning to the UK in Dec 1942 aboard the RMS Queen Mary, Herb served as ship's anti-aircraft officer. His post was with a three-man gun crew located on the top deck ahead of the second funnel. During one midnight shift, the ship began rolling worse than usual, and he and the gun crew took shelter inside the funnel casing. Shortly afterward, there was an unusually severe roll and they heard running water outside. Next morning at breakfast the ship's officers mentioned that the ship had rolled over so far that there was some doubt as to whether she would right herself.

The cause was a freak wave, similar to one off Greenland during WW2 that broke the windows in the RMS Queen Elizabeth's pilot house. If you want to appreciate the power of that wave, and ever have a chance to visit the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA stand on the top deck and see how high it is above the water.

A hole big enough to bury a Sherman tank By April 1945 the war in Europe was almost over. Herb's regiment, the British Columbia Dragoons had advanced through Holland and finally arrived at Groningen in North Holland. Herb and his crew parked their tank in the town square, and walked around the corner. Very shortly afterwards came a tremendous explosion and when they returned the tank had disappeared. Or so it seemed. As they approached the huge new crater, they saw the tank lying upside down in it. He remarked that was the second tank he'd lost in Holland.

A memorable meeting During Herb's time with 5th Armoured Div HQ in Italy, he became well-known to many of the senior officers, among whom was Field Marshal Montgomery. During a final parade in Holland at the end of the war in Europe, Montgomery was riding in a jeep down the rows of crews and tanks lined up on parade. As his jeep was passing Herb's tank troop, Montgomery called to his driver to stop. He greeted Herb by name, called him over and had a brief chat about what Herb had been
doing since they last met in Italy.

William Emery Seymour Gamblin
William Emery Seymour Gamblin

At Ottawa on 10 February, 2024 William ("Bill") Emery Seymour Gamblin in his 101st year. Beloved husband of Vivian Betts "Teddy" Gamblin. Much loved father of Evan Roger (Karen Joharia, née Hannusch), and Dahlan Geoffrey. Loving grandfather of Morna and Sean (Dominique née Yelle), Halima (Mike Rogers), Harlan and Sebastian. Proud great-grandfather of Raphaël and Sophie Gamblin, Hana, Sebastian and Reece Rogers, Harlow-Jean and Reylan-Jeffrey Gamblin and their mother Stephanie. Also mourning are cousins and many friends.

He graduated from Saint John High School, University of New Brunswick, Royal Military College of Science (UK) and the University of Ottawa. He was an Associate Fellow of the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute, Associate Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society, a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, the Canadian Operational Research Society, the Royal Ocean Racing Club, and the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club.

Apart from postings to artillery regiments, the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff London and National Defence HQ, Bill worked at CARDE (Defence Research Establishment Valcartier), Transport Canada and Industry Canada. He retired from the consulting engineering firm Hovey and Associates as VP Corporate Development and Chief Engineer.

As a boy, Bill took to sailing and boatbuilding. This became a lifelong passion, in which his many talents – wood and metal-working, boat design, and sailmaking, to name a few - all came into focus. At the age of 13 he built his first sailboat (a fast club racer) with an older school chum, and from then on rarely passed up an opportunity to go sailing: dinghy racing, exploring the Saint John River, racing and cruising at Britannia Yacht Club, ocean racing and cruising around the south coast of England and to France, Spain, Belgium and Holland.

Later came races off the North American Atlantic coast, and then 10 marvelous years of retirement afloat. 'Skipper Bill' & 'First Rate Mate Teddy' became water gypsies - living aboard and adventuring about Florida and the Bahamas. In their 70's they finally 'swallowed the anchor', and came ashore, fulfilling their longing for the sea with occasional cruises - to the Mediterranean, South America, Alaska, and around the world.

After suffering a debilitating stroke over 35 years ago, Bill maintained an uncomplaining attitude, enjoying life to the full. Among his writings was his autobiography, Who So?

They both had a talent for making friends, and numerous younger ones regarded them as "adopted grandparents". In the past few years, many of their support workers joined this latter group and enjoyed coming to help them.

The introduction to his 2004 biography Who So? includes this:

This is the story of much of my life. It isn’t complete, but in the following pages I'm a sailor, boatbuilder, stevedore, eel fisherman, soldier, photographer, mechanic, carpenter, chemist, metal worker, accountant, paratrooper, test engineer, armaments engineer, designer, mechanical engineer, marksman with rifle and pistol, glider pilot, navigator, clockmaker, traveler, scuba diver, vehicle engineer, businessman, cabinet maker, and, at last, a writer. I may have missed one or two, but this will give you an idea of the variety of jobs, training and hobbies that I had, most of them as a Technical Staff Officer in the Army.
