Descendants of Jean Perlier (1695 - 1749)

Generation No. 1

1. JEAN1 PERLIER, 1ST was born 1648 in La Tremblade, Charente Maritim, France, and died 1688 in La Tremblade, Charente Maritim, France. He married MARIE ARNAUD November 27, 1667 in La Tremblade, Perche France. She was born 1650 in France, and died Unknown.

Notes for JEAN PERLIER, 1ST:
Jean Perlier was born about 1640 in LaTremblade, Saintonge County, Maritime Providence, France. There he married Marie Arnaud, November 27, 1667. His occupation was that of a ship's pilot. During this time there was a great turmoil in France as Louis X111 came to power and ordered the Huguenots (French Protestants) to cease and desist. Children were taken from their parents and put into Catholic homes, parents were persecuted and all too frequently put to death. The Perliers were Huguenots and in order to keep their freedom of worship, planned to flee to the New World as many Huguenots were doing.
It appearsthat Jean met an untimely death as only Marie and her sons sailed for America in 1686. It has been told that they hid in hogsheads which had holes bored in them and were stored with the freight in the bottom of the ship until they were out of reach of the inspectors. On the ship Marie met Pierre Traverrier and they were married in the church, January 4, 1688 at Frenchtown, Narragansett, Rhode Island. The "widow" Perlier is on the list of church members on March 27, 1687. The following is Pierre and Marie's marriage contract: " Today the 4th of January, 1688, we Pierre Traverrier, ship captain, and Marie Arnaud, widow of Jean(John) Perlier, promise to take each other as husband and wife, the laws of our church being previously observed, we agree to live together in common as husband and wife the rest of our days, and in the case one of us should die, the one remaining shall enjoy in his own right all the wealth the two parties may possess, to dispose of as he may see fit to sell, assign, rent, etc., according as he may judge proper; and in case both of us should die without children from this marriage, we declare the children of the first marriage, who are Andre(Andrew) Perlier and Jean(John) Perlier, our legitimate heirs. Furthermore: I, Pierre Traverrier, give to Marie Arnaud the enjoyment of all my property and pretensions in France, in case the state of affairs should change and the liberty of the Protestant religion should be reestablished, giving her in general all that may belong to me. To all of these articles we have agreed in the presence of Mr. Carre, our minister, depository of this document, and of the witnesses below names. Signed: Pierre Traverrier and Marie Arnaud. On the other side the witnesses: Minister Carre, Jacques Many, Andre Arnaud, and Abraham Dumas."

Andre Arnaud was Marie's brother and was also a member of the French Church in Narragansett, Rhode Island. Pierre and Marie had two children, twins, a son and a daughter. They, Pierre and Marie Magdelene, were baptized January 6, 1689 by Rev. Carre. Pierre was apprenticed to Peter Chaigneau, cooper, by his mother, who at that time was referred to as a widow, October 21, 1701. Pierre married Mary Rezeau. They had only one child, a daughter, Mary Traverrier.

Notes for MARIE ARNAUD:
Daughter of ANDRE ARNAUD and MARIE GALLIHAUT.

" Our French roots go back to 17th century France, to the province of Charente Maritime on the west coast of the country on the Bay of Biscay. The earliest Perlier found so far is a Jean Perlier, born in 1648. He came from a maritime family and grew up to be a Pilotte de Navire, a title that literally translated means a naval pilot. Back then that meant not only a navigator but the person who actually created the charts, a vital speciality indeed. Jean 1 married the boss's daughter, Marie Arnaud, daughter of ship owner Andre Arnaud(born 1624) and his wife Marie Gallihaut (born 1628). Together Jean and Marie had two sons, Jean 11(born 1667) and Andre(born 1671. This was a tumultuous time in Europe, with nations and peoples pummeling one another host just for national interest but in the name of religion, no quarter given. God help you if you were a Protestant or a Catholic caught in the wrong place at the wrong time by other Christian brethren of a different persuasion. The Edict of Nantes, decreed by French King Henry IV in 1598 guaranteed full civil rights, freedom of conscience and public worship to the country's minority Protestants. Gradually, these rights were stripped away until in 1685, Louis IV revoked the Edict altogether. It was open season on Protestants. The Perliers were Protestant. When the slaughter and persecution began, the Perlier family was ripped apart. Possibly Jean 1 was at sea, for he managed to flee north to Holland. He never saw his family again and for many years believed then dead. Meanwhile back in France, Andre Arnaud smuggled daughter Marie and the two boys out of the country hidden in wine casks aboard one of his ships. They made their way to the North American Colonies via England. Marie and the boys, believing that Jean 1 had perished, eventually settled in Staten Island. Jean II was reportedly 19 when the family emigrated , meaning they arrived in the New World about 1688. Jean II married Anne Rezeau, another Huguenot refugee. Also born in the province of Charente Maritime, she was the daughter of Rene Rezeau and Ann Cousier. They had at least four children, all born in New York: Marie - February. 1699; Anne - Sept. 1701; Jean III - Sept. 1703; and Pierre - circa 1705. Meanwhile, Jean 1 had survived. With a clear conscience(him thinking that Marie and the boys had died in France) he married a Dutch girl and reared another family. The name Perlee as it was pronounced in Holland survives today. Ean III, son of Jean II and Anne Rezeau married Abigal Jones, moved south to North Carolina and became John Purlear. Jean III's brother Pierre married Martha Dubois and moved to New Jersey under the name Perlee. Their son , known by the Anglicized name of Peter Perlee(born Jan. 1739 married Miss Rebecca Ilsley and became a Revolutionary hero. Meanwhile, a cousin of his, also a Peter Perlee(descended from Jean II's brother Andre?) spied for the British. After the war his land in Pennsylvania was confiscated. The Loyalist Peter took his family and moved to Canada, founding the Canadian branch of the family.
